"A FINALIST in the TV show Make Me A Supermodel may have anorexia, her vital statistics suggest.
After studying photos of would-be model Marianne Berglund, Dr Joram Inspector — consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist at the eating disorders centre Cygnet Hospital in West London — says: "She is clearly underweight.
"A diagnosis of anorexia is made if the body mass index is below 17.5 — although that's not the only criteria."
Marianne is 5ft 10in and is believed to weigh just under 8st. That gives her a body mass index of around 16.2 — well below the minimum of 18 recently enforced by the Spanish fashion industry.
Throughout the reality show, judges, including supermodel Rachel Hunter, praised the stick-thin model's figure and heaped scorn on her size-12 competitor Jen Hunter.
But the public voted Jen the winning girl.
Dr Inspector says: "Unfortunately, in Western society we constantly get the message that thin is beautiful.
"It's a very constricted and dull view of beauty."
Marianne herself has said: "People tell me I'm too thin but it's my natural body shape and I can't do anything about it."
But Dr Inspector says: "She looks extremely thin. You can clearly see her rib-cage and her belly is concave. Her arms are very thin."
His warning comes after Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston starved herself to death on a diet of tomatoes and apples — the second model to die this year.
Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric problem — with one in five victims dying prematurely.
Dr Inspector says: "When the body is starved it starts to consume its muscles in order to get energy. The most important muscle in our body is our heart.
Dr Inspector adds: "Unfortunately, models aren't just seen as people who model clothes — they are also seen as role models.

"It would be simplistic to say the fashion industry is to blame for anorexia but I believe these role models have a significant influence."
