Primul desert inghetat a fost creat in Imperiul Roman, pe timpul imparatului Nero. Acesta era o combinatie intre zapada (adusa de sclavi din munti) si nectar, pulpa de fruct si miere.

Aparitia inghetatei este legata si de Marco Polo, despre care se spune ca ar fi adus in Europa recipiente de pastrare a ghetei, spunand ca ele se folosesc in Asia de mii de ani. El a invatat de la chinezi metoda de a crea gheata si laptele inghetat. Cu timpul, recipientele de pastrare a ghetei s-au dezvoltat si inghetata a devenit o delicatesa la curtile Frantei si ale Angliei.

Prima masina comerciala de facut inghetata a fost inventata in Australia in 1855, iar producerea mecanizata a inghetatei a inceput in anul 1880. In 1899, August Gaulin a inventat omogenizatorul si crema de inghetata a devenit mai moale. In 1919, in America, a aparut prima inghetata invelita in ciocolata si in 1920 prima inghetata pe bat.
